HBO invented a boxing glove with a sensor to measure punch speed

It may seem a little strange to some, but the American television network HBO (Home Box Office), which created the TV series Game of Thrones, patented a sensor system for a boxing glove that shows the punch speed in real time.

The technology behind HBO 's patent , which it calls PunchForce, shows how fast and powerfully a punch moves, while a sensor installed in a boxer's boxing glove and body could tell in real time the force with which a punch hits an opponent.

It is not the first time that similar force sensor technology has been used in sports. Similarly, we have seen gadgets in baseball and tennis that usually have some sensors to measure the speed at which a ball could be hit.

According to Venturebeat, the patent describes the technology in question as having a gyroscope and an accelerometer built into the front of the boxing glove.

When the glove is used, a database with many motion profiles of previous punches is employed to compare the current punch with past ones so that the athlete can monitor his progress with greater accuracy.

But why did the television network HBO become interested and patent this technology? We believe it is quite obvious—to use it in live NFL games.
