RINA: Two arrests and 4 criminal cases for child pornography

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate conducted targeted investigations, under the code name "RINA", in collaboration with foreign authorities to combat child pornography.

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate, within the framework of a targeted investigation under the code name "RINA", in collaboration with foreign authorities, to combat child pornography, investigated a relevant case.

Two (2) Greek nationals, aged 32 and 38, were arrested in the context of the ongoing proceedings, while regular proceedings were initiated against four (4) more Greek nationals, aged 24, 30, 37 and 50.

The investigation of the case began after a targeted online investigation (RINA), in collaboration with foreign authorities, into a P2P file sharing network, for possession and distribution of child pornography. Specifically, the online investigation focused on recording the electronic traces of individuals who possessed and were able to share a specific child pornography file.

The audit resulted in seven (7) electronic traces, corresponding to six (6) users within the Greek Territory, specifically subscribers to internet and telephony service providers.

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate conducted a thorough digital investigation and analysis of the data and elements of the case. An Order and Decree were issued to lift the confidentiality of communications and correspondence with the competent internet and telecommunications service providers, in order to identify the administrators - owners of the electronic traces in question.

During the period from 18 to 25 June 2015, legal searches were carried out in areas of the Prefectures of Pella, Magnesia, Aitoloakarnania, Attica and Thessaloniki at the homes of the six (6) involved.

The following were found and seized during the investigations:

  • Two (2) laptops
  • Six (6) internal hard drives
  • One (1) computer.

The seized digital evidence will be sent to the Criminal Investigations Directorate for appropriate laboratory tests.

The arrested persons, with the case file drawn up against them, will be taken to the competent Public Prosecutor. The regular procedure case files drawn up for the case will be submitted to the competent authority.
