Two weeks ago, rumors that BlackBerry was developing an Android smartphone. According to the same rumors, the device would be released by the end of 2015.
Although sources familiar with the matter initially claimed that a Canadian company was already preparing a high-end smartphone with the Android operating system, the latest rumors have BlackBerry planning a low-end one for emerging markets in Asian countries such as Indonesia, India and the Philippines.
However, the Canadian company did not confirm the manufacture of the Android smartphone.
During an interview with CNBC, BlackBerry CEO John Chen was asked if his company is actually planning to release an Android smartphone, and if it will be released this year.
Chen said that his company “only makes secure phones, and BlackBerry is the most secure phone.”
So if they can find a way to ensure that the Android device is secure, they will move forward.
The statement was of course very diplomatic, as it neither confirmed nor ruled out the rumors that BlackBerry is planning to release an Android smartphone this year.
However, it should be noted that the company announced its financial results for Q1 FY16, and it appears to have only shipped 1.1 million smartphones during 2015.
Of course, these can't be the company's expected results, so the rumors about BlackBerry running Android seem to make sense.
We'll see what happens in the coming months.
