As it appears, smartphones with 4K resolution are coming. Initially it was Samsung that hinted at 4K AMOLED screens for the upcoming Galaxy Note 5. Today the IGZO screen supplier from Japan, Sharp, announced the first 5.5‑inch mobile screen with a resolution of 2160×3840 pixels Ultra‑HD (4K).
The screen has been scheduled for mass production in 2016, and will have a resolution density of 806 pixels per inch according to phonearena.com.
The announcement sounds a bit crazier in its aftermath, as the company mentions the prospect of building such a device in the near future, where screens will reach 8K (4320×7680), with 16 times more pixels than the old 1080p.
The also paradoxical aspect in the above announcement is how the company thinks about powering such a screen… For how long will a current battery be able to support 4K or 8K screens?
Hopefully, battery technology will evolve as quickly as the ultra-high-definition displays being designed by manufacturers like Sharp.
