Microsoft Research: What is Hyperlapse technology?

Microsoft is trying to improve on some of its existing technologies with new ones if they prove to be better. The so-called Hyperlapse program was announced last year by Microsoft Research and aims to remove camera shake when shooting video on a smartphone.Microsoft Research

Basically, Microsoft Research's Hyperlapse is investigating some kind of advanced optical optimization that would apply not only to Microsoft's Lumia smartphones, but could be applied to any camera from any brand.

Currently, not many smartphones have their cameras equipped with OIS (optical image stabilization). This feature can provide a smooth video recording experience when the person using the smartphone is in motion (running or walking).

However, with Hyperlapse, Microsoft Research hopes to be able to reconstruct camera movement in shaky videos, as well as the distance and angle relative to what is happening in each frame.

The project originally started as a way to stabilize images taken with GoPro cameras while on the move, but Microsoft discovered that it can be applied to any smartphone camera
.
The app with this software was just spotted in the Windows Phone Store by MicrosoftInsider.es.

If you want to try the beta version and don't know exactly what it can do, Microsoft says:

“Our method is radically different from previous approaches. We recreate a full 3D model of the camera path and the world. This allows the camera path to be smoothed in space-time and creates an output video with a constant speed camera, skipping the “slow” parts of the video.

"Our method can cover the missing areas in the video by stitching pixels from multiple input frames. Thanks to these two innovations, it can handle very difficult videos, such as videos of mountain climbing or horse riding."
