Samsung is preparing iris scanners for its devices

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S5 last year, the revolutionary technology was its new fingerprint login feature. Twelve months later, the company seems to be looking for a different security technology. By signing a deal with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), the Korean company is preparing to add iris scanning technology to its future smartphones and tablets.Iris on the Move Samsung

Samsung decided that the first products to feature SRI technology would be its professional devices, and thus acquired the first custom Galaxy Tab 8.4 Pro that works seamlessly with Iris on the Move.

The Iris on the Move (IoM) is already offered in various SRI-branded products, but the partnership with Samsung will give the company a much larger potential market.

The adoption of iris scanning gives Samsung an advantage over fingerprint scanning used by its eternal rival Apple, and as we have seen, they can be easily fooled by a hacker simply by imprinting a fingerprint onto a mold.

Iris scanning with SRI on the Galaxy Tab will be showcased in April at the ISC West trade show in Las Vegas.

The SRI system greatly enhances the accuracy of iris scanning, as the company states that it is “1,000 times” more accurate than fingerprints for user authentication. The company also notes that the Iris on the Move (IOM) system operates without requiring the user to keep their eyes still for scanning.
