Anonymous vs. Islamic State, mass targeting of social media accounts

Anonymous claimed responsibility for targeting and shutting down approximately 800 Twitter accounts, 12 Facebook pages, and over 50 email accounts believed to be associated with the Islamic State – ISIS .

As reported by CNN, Twitter did not respond to a request for comment, while Facebook confirmed that it had taken down 11 of the 12 pages that Anonymousfor violating its rules. There was no comment on whether the hackers had been informed of the material in question.

It is noted that the well-known "alliance" of hackers declared "war" against Islamic extremists last month, claiming in a YouTube video that its members would search for their websites and social media networks and "take them down.".

In another video, Anonymous warned ISIS that "you will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure. The internet is ours.".

According to CNNMoney, the majority of Twitter accounts targeted by Anonymous displayed messages of inactivity or suspension.

Both Twitter and Facebook block accounts and material related to terrorist activity, but it is difficult to monitor millions of users, so they rely on user flags/complaints.

Anonymous has become known in recent years for attacks on pages belonging to governments, companies and other entities. The campaign against ISIS began after the terrorist attacks in France in January.
