With operational complexity becoming an increasingly common feature of modern cybercrime, Kaspersky Lab has launched a new online service that brings together all available information on the most sophisticated malicious campaigns. The interactive Targeted Cyberattacks Logbook showcases the full research work of Kaspersky Lab’s renowned Global Research and Analysis Team.
“Four years ago, we could consider targeted digital campaigns as exceptional events, but today, we are investigating more and more such incidents every year. They are no longer isolated events. Targeted attacks have found a special place in the world of digital threats and require special attention. That is why we have launched this new online service. We want to demonstrate the scale of sophisticated digital campaigns and provide a means to assess their development and reach. In 2014 alone, we recorded more than 4,400 victims of targeted attacks in the business sector,” said Alexander Gostev, Chief Security Expert at Kaspersky Lab.
The company's "online radar" includes years of research on 29 major targeted attacks, including well-known campaigns such as Regin, Darkhotel, Cloud Atlas and others. Through the new service, users can explore the relationships between threats, their trends and impacts, or investigate the behavior of specific threats.
Each cyberattack is displayed on a timeline in the form of a ship: the larger the ship, the longer the campaign has been in operation. The “waters” behind the ship show the time elapsed from the detection of the first malware samples to the publication of the results of the research project. The color gradient indicates the number of victims.
The service provides the ability to monitor possible relationships between various digital campaigns, as well as to retrieve detailed information about each of them, such as the geography of «infections», the methods by which the malicious software was spread, the goals of the digital criminals, and the specific characteristics of each attack. A user-friendly filter helps classify the attacks into categories, making it possible, for example, to identify attacks that targeted only information from private companies, in a specific country, using specific techniques.
