Websites of the German government, including the page of Chancellor Merkel, “were hacked» on Wednesday as part of a cyber‑attack for which an organization that demands the termination of official relations between Berlin and the Ukrainian government took responsibility.
The attack – against which countermeasures were taken, as Reuters reports, made the sites practically inaccessible from 11 a.m. (Greek time), as became known.
The CyberBerkut group claimed responsibility in a post on its website. “Berkut” refers to the riot police units of the country’s pro-Russian former president, Viktor Yanukovych, who was overthrown during violent uprisings in early 2014.
«CyberBerkut blocked the websites of the German chancellor and of Bundestag. We urge the people and the government of Germany to stop the economic and political support for the criminal regime of Kyiv, which started a bloody civil war» it is reported. However, it has not yet been confirmed by independent experts whether CyberBerkut is indeed responsible for the attack.".
