Google executives haven't yet declared the project a failure, but Google Glass has been a long time coming. Some are starting to question the future of wearables in general.
For several months, almost no one has heard anything about Google Glass, or anything related to Google Glass, so some are wondering if wearables still exist – or if they have a future.
Google Glass first burst onto the scene about a year and a half ago, but hasn't been released to the public since. Despite initial battery life issues and a lack of apps for the new platform, it was a notable effort for wearable technology.
Today, every company is developing wearable devices. Most of the wearables that are on the market are made to be worn on the wrist, to monitor the health and fitness of the owner. Google Glass, in its current form, is still not on the market.
According to Reuters, more than half of the developers working on developing applications for Google Glass have said their projects have been abandoned, citing a lack of customers and the limitations of the device. Alarm bells were sounded again recently when Google Glass creator Babak Parviz left the company to work at rival Amazon.
Can the Google Glass project survive? Google thinks it can.
Maybe there's nothing to worry about. But if the developers aren't there, and what they're developing for Google Glass is underdeveloped. It's a known fact that developers provide half the innovation with their ideas.
The end of the year is coming, and Google's Brin wanted them to be released in 2014, which is unlikely to happen. More likely, we might hear about them again in 2015.
The Google Glass project is not dead yet. Unfortunately, its future remains unknown.
