Microsoft: makes .NET open source and makes it available on Linux and Mac OSX

Microsoft plans to open source the full server-side .NET core to make .NET available on Linux and Mac OS X. The company announced its latest plans for .NET today at the Connect(); launch .

In April 2014, Microsoft announced plans to open source a number of its technologies, including ASP.NET, the Roslyn .NET compiler platform, the .NET Micro Framework, .NET Rx, and the VB and C# programming languages.open source .net Microsoft
Today, the company added more pieces of .NET to its list of open-source projects that will be released under the MIT Open Source License. The new pieces of .NET that Microsoft is opening up include: the .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR), the just-in-time compiler, the garbage collector, and the Base Class libraries.

Microsoft is opening up the .NET core runtime server-side so applications can be created that run on Windows, Linux, and Mac.

The company will use GitHub to host core framework porting and open source.

Microsoft of course does not plan to release the .NET client side source code, which means that there will be no open libraries available for clients, such as Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows Forms.
