It is announced that on 27-09-2014, a decision of the National Telecommunications and Postal Commission, aiming to protect citizens from theft of mobile telephone devices.
With the aforementioned decision, mobile telephony companies are obliged to deactivate (block), through the IMEI code, all mobile phone devices that are declared by their subscribers as stolen.
Specifically, in the event of a stolen mobile phone device and in order to deactivate it, the owner of the device must initially report the theft to the competent Greek Police Services, also mentioning the IMEI code, and will receive proof of the theft report.
He/she must then submit a written request to the mobile phone provider to which he/she subscribes to, to deactivate the device, attaching proof of theft.
It is noted that the "International Mobile Equipment Identifier - IMEI" consists of 15 or 17 digits and is unique, which is why it is used by mobile networks to identify the phone during connection.
Usually the IMEI number is written on the "slot" that houses the phone's battery. It is printed clearly on a white label that also contains other information about the device. In many cases, the IMEI number is written on the packaging, accompanying documents, user manual, and also on the legal receipt of purchase of the mobile phone, while for the majority of mobile phones it can also be retrieved electronically.
It is noted that useful tips for avoiding theft, robbery and loss of mobile telephone devices have been posted on the website of the Hellenic Police in the "Citizen's Guide" category.
