Microsoft recently announced that it will stop supporting old versions of Internet Explorer. This means that if you are still using an old version of the company's browser, it would be a good idea to upgrade to a newer version .
Those still using Windows Vista Service Pack 2 should upgrade to Internet Explorer 9, while those using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 should upgrade to Internet Explorer 11.
The end of support for older versions of Internet Explorer will take place on January 12, 2016, so there's no need to panic, as you have more than a year to update your browser. For businesses, however, such a change could have a much bigger impact, especially considering that there are enterprise applications that are specifically designed to run on a specific version of Internet Explorer.
Below are the recommended versions of Internet Explorer for upgrades that should be made before January 2016, depending on the version of the operating system that powers your device:
- Windows Vista SP2 – Internet Explorer 9
- Windows Server 2008 SP2 – Internet Explorer 9
- Windows 7 SP1 – Internet Explorer 11
- Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 – Internet Explorer 11
- Windows 8.1 – Internet Explorer 11
- Windows Server 2012 – Internet Explorer 10
- Windows Server 2012 R2 – Internet Explorer 11
Microsoft states:
“After January 12, 2016, only the latest version of Internet Explorer will be available on supported operating systems that receive technical support and security updates. For example, customers using Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, or Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 SP1 will need to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11 to continue receiving security updates and technical support.”
