Google to lay new cable across Pacific Ocean

Google is considering making a huge new investment with an Internet cable that would span the entire Pacific Ocean.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which reports that the information comes from anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the decision comes as the company's move to expand private networks.

The move will give Google, and any other companies that partner with it, more control over the quality and prioritization of internet traffic long before it reaches consumers. The new cable will connect the company's data centers in Japan.

It wouldn't be the first time Google has done something like this, as the company bought a cable in 2010 for $300 million, in partnership with other phone companies.

The types of private networks that Google hopes to improve are those that deal exclusively with home, office and business access, providing an extra layer of security since it cannot be accessed by devices outside the network.

The publication says that a large portion of Google's bandwidth is dedicated to its private "B4" network, which carries emails, YouTube videos and more between the company's data centers. "B4" already has more traffic than the networks it uses for the general public for search results or video.
