Google Developer Group (GDG) Thessaloniki: Maps are no longer just static data on paper but living representations of our world. The landscape around us is constantly changing and the mountains may not move, but the roads are changing, houses are being built, shops are opening and closing.
Maps to keep up to Google date and keep up to date, it is important that anyone with an internet connection, from anywhere, can contribute their knowledge to updating them, for the areas they know best.
That is why we are very excited that Google Map Maker is now available and gives budding cartographers the opportunity to edit the maps of Greece.
With Map Maker, anyone can contribute their local knowledge to create an even more comprehensive, useful and interesting European map. Start with your city or village and add descriptions of local shops, restaurants and other businesses. You can also help enrich the maps with national parks, recreational areas and historical sites, camping sites, beautiful beaches or your favorite cycling trails.
Whether it's adding a bike path in Thessaloniki or an attraction in the Upper Town, every improvement to the map will help locals and tourists better understand the area and discover new things to do. Once approved, everyone's map contributions will appear on Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google Maps for mobile.
The GDG Thessaloniki team invites you to start “Mapping our beautiful city”!
To get started, join us at the first official Panhellenic Google MapUp event!
On Saturday, May 24th at 5:00 PM at TIF-HELEXPO, GDG will introduce you to everything new in Google Maps and their tools, and we will meet the city's Google Mappers!
After this brief presentation and the “icebreaker” we will organize together the program for the “Geowalk” for next Saturday, May 31st at 9.30am at the meeting point designated for each group from where we will begin the “Mapping of our city”!
Because all revisions and additions will be made as a Google Developers Group they will be automatically approved. In this way we will help promote local activities, attractions and points of interest of Thessaloniki as we will correct possibly incorrect information that already exists on Google maps, directly!
What will you need?
Your camera or smartphone, enthusiasm, fun and a notebook with a pen to note all the information and data from the route you will cover with your team.
We will give you the exclusive T-shirt “Google mapper – Thessaloniki” and gadgets and we will collaborate with wonderful companies to give the best Team incredible prizes!
Everyone who takes part will receive a certificate of participation and become members of the official Google MapMaker community in Greece.
