Neurogrid Integrated circuit mimics the brain

Neurogrid is 9 thousand times faster than a PC and is revolutionizing many areas.

Neurogrid

Researchers in the US have developed an integrated circuit that mimics the way the human brain works. This circuit processes data nine thousand times faster than the integrated circuits of a conventional computer and of course surpasses the performance of very advanced computing systems.

The revolutionary integrated circuit was created by researchers at Stanford University and called "Neurogrid", meaning a grid of neurons. The circuit is about the size of an iPad and consists of 16 chips that the researchers call "Neurocore". The Neurogrid can simulate the function of a million neurons and billions of synapses.

The capabilities of Neurogrid far surpass other electronic systems that mimic brain function. The creation of Neurogrid is expected to revolutionize the fields of robotics and computers. It is also likely to allow scientists to better understand how the brain works.

A first application of Neurogrid that the research team that created it is working on is a new generation of prosthetic limbs. These limbs will operate with chips that will decode brain signals more quickly and efficiently without side effects, such as overheating the brain.
