The second camera that eliminates focus has been introduced by the American company Lytro. The Lytro Illum, which, like the original model, works completely differently from conventional cameras, as it is based on the company's "light field" technology.
Thanks to this technology, the owner of a photo has the ability, after taking a photo, to focus on any part of the image he wants, before printing it – for example, making objects in the foreground look clear and “blurring” the background. Also, if he “uploads” the corresponding digital file on the Internet, each user will be able to adjust the focus on any part of the photo, simply by clicking with his mouse at the corresponding point.
Although the way it captures images remains the same, the new Lytro Illum has a completely different design from the first camera, now reminiscent of conventional DSLR cameras. It is also equipped with a new, larger lens and improved sensor, ensuring sharper images, which are now captured in a 3:2 aspect ratio.
The Lytro Illum also comes with a 4-inch tilting screen, which allows you to frame your image. Its new features are complemented by a micro SD card slot and a removable battery, which add even more flexibility to its user.
The camera is expected to be released in the US in July, at a price that will range from $1,600 – four times more than the $400 that the original Lytro cost. However, according to the company, the Lytro Illum is intended for professionals or those who are passionate about photography and want to take advantage of the “light field” technology with a top-of-the-line camera. In addition, in 2014, as a company representative revealed to TIME, other, much more affordable models will be released.
