In documents that the public cannot see, Apple states precisely what the iPhone needs for even larger sales: a larger screen and a lower price.
The internal documents were revealed during the most recent lawsuit between Apple and Samsung, which began a week ago. Apple once again sued Samsung, claiming that the Korean company copied the iPhone and infringed five of Apple's patents.
The documents, which were revealed during the trial, appear to show that Apple is seriously considering the possibility of building a larger smartphone in the style of Samsung's phones. The following slides that appeared in an internal Apple meeting in April 2013.
The slide begins with the observation that iPhone sales have slowed considerably
Why? “The biggest demand exists for the cheaper but also for smartphones with larger screens,” says the next slide. Samsung appears to dominate because it manufactures cheaper and larger smartphones.
The next slide states exactly the problem: “Consumers want what we don’t have.”
Specifically, consumers seem to want smartphones with larger screens and lower prices. Apple, of course, has already started moving towards this direction with the iPhone 5C, and sketches have already leaked that appear to show that the next iPhone will have a truly larger screen.
Let us remind that larger screens for iPhones were something that Apple’s co‑founder, Steve Jobs, was completely opposed to. In 2010, Jobs said about his competitors’ phones: “you can’t hold it in your hand”, and that “no one is going to buy a phone that is that big.”
