During Build 2014, Microsoft demonstrated "Windows in the Car," the platform that will bring Windows Phone operating system applications to the dashboard of a car.
Microsoft's basic idea is quite similar to Apple's recently introduced CarPlay, and concerns a method of displaying what is on a smartphone directly on a multi-purpose screen on a car's dashboard.
Microsoft's platform uses MirrorLink connectivity technology and borrows elements from the user interface of both the company's desktop and mobile operating systems. Many functions have been assigned to on-screen touch buttons, so that actions can be performed instantly and without the driver having to take their eyes off the road.
Additionally, emphasis has been placed on the use of voice commands, through which actions can be performed without the driver needing to interact with the screen. This function may be performed by a modified version of the digital assistant Cortana.
It's unclear how soon Windows in the Car will arrive in commercially available car models. Microsoft staff are already working on testing in real cars and are able to demonstrate some of the features.
However, there has been no announcement of availability or potential car manufacturers interested in the new platform. Some companies, such as Citroen, Honda, Toyota and VW, have integrated MirrorLink technology into their models, which is also compatible with systems from Alpine and Pioneer.
Finally, it is worth noting that Microsoft has provided technological solutions for creating in-car entertainment systems. As the Verge reports, automakers Ford, Kia, BMW, Nissan and Fiat have used special versions of Windows to create user environments and systems that have been integrated into various car models.
