According to the latest data from the research firm NPD Group, in February, Sony's PlayStation 4 achieved slightly better sales compared to its major rival, Microsoft's Xbox One.
The data concerns the United States market.
In its statement, the NPD Group does not make a clear reference to sales figures, briefly stating that the Xbox One achieved 90% of the sales volume that the PS4 achieved.
Subsequently, a Microsoft announcement followed, which mentions the sale of 258,000 Xbox One units in February, leading to the conclusion that PS4 sales reached 287,000 units.
However, as noted by the NPD Group, the two consoles are available on the market with a significant price difference, as the Xbox One costs $500, while the PS4 starts at $400.
In this way, the value of each one's sales is quite different.
Parallelly, Microsoft announced that it also sold 114,000 Xbox 360 consoles in February in the US, which marks the presence of this platform in the market for 100 consecutive months.
Overall, the market in the US moved up by 42% compared to the same period last year and by 44% compared to the previous month. The total market for consoles, portable devices and PCs saw a decline of 11% compared to February 2013 and an increase of 41% compared to January 2014.
The total market profits amounted to $328 million, versus $232 million in January.
Additionally, Microsoft has also published data concerning software sales for its consoles. More specifically, the Xbox One «sells» 2,75 game titles for each console.
In total, 772,000 titles were sold for the Xbox One and 2.46 million titles for the older Xbox 360, which together account for 48% of the market.
The most popular games for February in the US were: Call of Duty Ghosts, The Lego Movie Videogame, NBA 2K14, Thief and Grand Theft Auto V.
Microsoft supports its substantial recovery with the release of Titanfall, exclusively for its consoles.
