The US National Security Agency (NSA) has issued a statement in response to recent allegations (PDF) that the agency has infected millions of computers with malware.
Earlier this week, Glenn Greenwald, via the Intercept website, leaked Edward Snowden that state that the NSAhas tools at its disposal that allow it to automatically infect millions of computers around the world.
Read how he does it here and here.
The NSA was also accused of leading users to fake Facebook pages and other popular websites to infect their computers with malware.
The NSA does not usually respond to posts that come from the files that Snowden has in his hands, but this time it reacted. The service reports that the posts based on the latest documents leaked by Snowden “are inaccurate.”
“The NSA uses its techniques and expertise only to support lawful and legitimate actions in foreign intelligence services, which are carried out strictly in accordance with its principles. Technical capability must be understood within the framework of a legal, political and operational context in which this expertise should be used” the agency's statement says.
“The principles of the NSA require that actions against foreign intelligence services must be supported by valid national security directives, to protect the lawful interests of the private lives of all people. The NSA does not use its technical capabilities to mimic the network sites of other companies.”
We must admit that the statements of the secret service are very well phrased, but that does not mean they are credible. Especially after everything we have heard.
