A law firm in Charlotte, North Carolina, has admitted that they have fallen victim to a ransomware attack called CryptoLocker.
According to WSOCTV, the attackers managed to infect one of the company's servers when they sent them a fake notification that had the malware attached to it.
When the law firm's technicians were unable to retrieve the files, they agreed to pay $300 to regain access. Representatives for the firm said they lost access to thousands of legal documents, but no confidential information was lost. (What can they say, anyway?)
Experts recommend not paying any money, but many companies, especially small businesses, often succumb to CryptoLocker. A police department in the US has admitted to paying $750 to recover its files.
