Index of Censorship believes the European Union failed to protect Edward Snowden, the NSA, or media reports of the biggest scandal of the year.
“No EU member state has stood up for Edward Snowden. The EU has failed to issue a strong collective statement against the mass surveillance of the US Secret Service, nor do they have fair defamation laws that have prevailed across the continent,” said Mike Harris, head of the Index of Censorship, as reported by the Guardian.
Of course, it was not only Snowden that Europe failed to protect, but also freedom of expression, when British authorities accused the Guardian newspaper of revealing the secret services.
“Media freedom is under pressure – as the recent seizure of the Guardian’s computers and the Hungarian government’s crackdown on the media show – while all states have signed up to strong human rights commitments. While the EU talks about the importance of ‘European values’, it fails to practice what it preaches,” said Harris.
