The assumption is that you are already an iPhone or iPad and have already activated Find My iPhone. It is perhaps the first thing that an owner of a High End device should do, immediately after acquiring it. If you have not already activated it, log in to your iCloud account or create a new one from Settings / iCloud / Account. Then, turn the Find My iPhone switch to ON. You are ready, now if you lose your iPhone or iPad, use any web browser and open the website https://www.icloud.com/ , provide your login details and click on the Find My iPhone icon. You will have the following options:
- Play Sound: extremely useful for finding your device if it has fallen under your bed, or more generally if it is next to you and you cannot see it.
- Lock Mode: allows you to display a message on the lock screen with a contact number. The honest owner of your device may think of calling you.
- Erase iPhone: if that doesn't work, move on to more drastic measures. If you don't want them to see your data, you can use the option to erase it.
That's all well and good, but what if the owner of your device is aware of the security feature and disables it? For extra security, you should enable and lock your device's Restrictions, as well as location services. How?
Settings / General / Restrictions / Turn on Restrictions ( enter your passcode )
If they are not on, select the option to Turn on Restrictions and then create a 4-digit PIN and confirm.
Then go to Privacy > Location Services and select Do Not Allow Changes
