According to Reuters, a new piece of software works like a human brain for one purpose: it can bypass CAPTCHAs. CAPTCHAs are the service websites use to verify that those trying to log in are humans and not machines.
- Vicarious developed an algorithm for this purpose, said co-founder D. Scott Phoenix.
In a telephone interview he had with Reuters, he said: “We wanted to show that we could create the first machine that operates like a human brain, and that we are the best place in the world for artificial intelligence research.”
The company has yet to submit a study describing its methodology to an academic journal, making it difficult for outside experts to evaluate the new technology. The company offers a demonstration of its new technology in a video that shows its algorithm breaking CAPTCHAs from Google , PayPal , and eBay, among others.
The said Vicarious algorithm has success rates of 90 to 97%, depending on the difficulty of the CAPTCHA.
