Even though Microsoft has been increasingly vocal about its commitment to protecting its users' privacy, the PRISM revelations have shown that everything it claims is far from the truth.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Guardian reports that Skype is now under investigation in Luxembourg by the data protection agency, following reports that Microsoft handed over user data to the US National Security Agency (NSA).
Skype ,which is based in Luxembourg, has already been accused of being used by the NSA to eavesdrop on conversations. Luxembourg could therefore issue new criminal and administrative sanctions.
Microsoft has not yet commented on the possibility of being fined in Europe, but the head of Luxembourg's data protection department, Gerard Lommel, confirmed that an investigation is underway.
