We know that Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft on April 8, 2014, and many people are already switching operating systems. However, despite Microsoft's aggressive marketing campaign for the new Windows 8 and 8.1, many people are choosing to upgrade to Windows 7, which is a fairly user-friendly platform.
Microsoft, however, does not seem to agree, since its goal is to promote Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
Paul Thurrot, in a post on WindowsITPro, states that Microsoft wants to avoid the process of moving its users to a newer platform and for this reason will stop supporting Windows 7.
At the same time, it will continue to promote Windows 8, forcing those who want to change operating system to take advantage of some offer from the company.
Support for Windows 7 will end on January 13, 2015, while extended support, which includes only bug fixes and a number of critical security patches, will end on January 14, 2015.
