A Swedish sociology professor has nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize. He said the NSA whistleblower could help “save the agency from the hasty and ill-conceived decision” to award the 2009 prize to Barack Obama.
In his letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Stefan Svallfors praised Snowden for his “heroic effort at great personal cost.” He said that by revealing the existence and extent of U.S. surveillance programs, Snowden showed that there are still “individuals who can stand up for fundamental rights and freedoms.”
“This example is important because, since the Nuremberg trials in 1945 made it clear that the slogan “I was following orders” cannot be used as a justification for actions that violate human rights and freedoms,” Professor Svallfors said, as reported by RT.
