While Cuba has not yet commented on the asylum request filed by Edward Snowden, it appears that its president supports the decision made by Latin American governments.
In a statement made on Sunday, Cuban President Raul Castro said he supports the decision to grant asylum to Snowden by Latin American countries. The statements were made last weekend, RTVE.
“We support the sovereign right of Venezuela and all states in the region to grant asylum to those persecuted for their ideals and struggles for democratic rights,” Castro said.
Given that the quickest route to any possible destination for Snowden would be through Cuba, it would have been ideal if he had been offered asylum.
All other routes to Venezuela and Bolivia pass through Western European countries that have already declared that if a plane lands for refueling and Snowden is on board, they will arrest him, since the United States has already sent arrest warrants everywhere.
