Two weeks ago, Apple's plans to move its San Francisco Apple Store a few blocks down in Union Square were positively embraced by politicians and city planners, and it seemed like the deal was done. However, it probably wasn't, because Apple's plans also include tearing down a fountain that locals have a particular weakness for.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Apple's current plans for the store do not include any space for the bronze fountain, which is the creation of artist Ruth Asawa. Locals are concerned that Apple will tear it down or hide it altogether, which has worried politicians and even led Mayor Ed Lee to reconsider whether to support the company's plans.
“We hadn’t thought of that,” said Lee, who then claimed that he needs to take another look at the plans and imagine what the final result will look like and how Apple could incorporate the fountain into its proposal. In addition, Apple wants to build a very tall blank wall on one side, which could spoil the aesthetics of the space or even become a target for vandalism.
There is still plenty of time to fix these problems, and Apple's plans must first get approval from the relevant committees.
