Google's Android is getting its own jukebox: at the developer conference it organized in San Francisco, the company announced that it is launching a subscription music service with streaming technology in the US.
Users of Google Play, the app store for Android devices, could until now only play songs they had purchased from Google Play itself. Thanks to the new service, with the All Access service, they will be able to play thousands more songs on their device.
When a user selects a song, All Access displays a list of similar tracks. “We wanted to create a music service that not only gives you access to great music but also guides you,” said Google’s Chris Yerga at the I/O conference in San Francisco.
All Access will, however, face competition from popular services such as Pandora and Spotify, which are not available in Greece. Apple is also reportedly preparing a similar service.
It also remains unclear if and when All Access will be available on the European market.
In the US, the subscription costs $9.99 per month with a 30-day free trial.
According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Google has reached an agreement with three major record labels: Sony, Warner and Universal.
At the I/O conference, Google also introduced improvements to Google Play for video game enthusiasts, who will now have the ability to save their scores to Google's cloud and automatically find other players of their level with whom they can compete.
Three company employees attempted to demonstrate the new features to attendees, but the attempt failed due to a problem with the wireless network.
