Mary Leakey is the honored figure in the Google Doodle today February 6.
Leakey was a British archaeologist and anthropologist, who discovered the first fossilized anthropoid (a primate that has become extinct and is believed to be the ancestor of humans). She also discovered Zinjanthropus (Paranthropus, a genus of extinct early humans).
Leakey was born on February 6, 1913, and today is her 100th birthday. She died in 1996 at the age of 83.
In 1978 at Laetoli in Tanzania, paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey discovered a very exciting prehistoric find, which existed in hardened volcanic ash: the footprints of a hominin (if we can call it that since it was not exactly a human) that walked upright about 3.6 million years ago.
