The Tor project and the Debian project have collaborated to provide Debian services and repositories through the Tor project. Debian announced the existence of these few services in a blog post.
The Debian project, which works on the development of the Linux-based Debian OS, has announced that its services and repositories will be made available on the Tor network. The reason behind this move is to enhance the anonymity and security of Debian Linux.
"While onion services can be used to hide the network location of the machine providing the service, that is not our goal here. Instead, we use onion services because they provide end-to-end integrity and confidentiality and identify the onion service endpoint," Peter Palfrader writes in a blog post
Tor's onion routing method has proven its worth since its inception. It offers a high level of security for highly encrypted connections and also hides the identity of users on the network.
"As a community, we recognize that users should not feel like their every action is being tracked or monitored by others," he added in the post.
The Debian project plans to cover more services with a .onion address in the future. Currently, the Debian Security and Debian FTP archives are available via the .onion address. After installing the apt-transport-tor package, the Tor-enabled mirrors will replace the existing ones in the apt configuration file.
Additionally, you can access the Tor Debian repository via:
deb tor+https://sdscoq7snqtznauu.onion/torproject.org jessie main
You can see the full list of Debian services that the Tor network covers by visiting onion.debian.org. Various Tor backends will be used to facilitate load balancing across services.
