Sometimes you might need to measure something and you probably don't have a ruler or tape measure with you, but don't worry, there's an app for just that. The app, called VisualRuler, gives you a decent estimate of the dimensions of an object using your phone's camera.

Here's how it works:
To give the app a reference point for the scale, you should include a credit card or wallet of the same size, place it next to the object you want to measure, and then take a picture. Credit cards are always the same size, which is why they are suitable as a reference for the scale. The picture will not leave your device, so there will be no security issue.
Then, drag & drop the measurement lines onto the card and onto the object you want to measure. It may not give you the exact measurement but it will definitely give you a decent estimate. You should know that it is only intended for measuring objects that are on a flat surface.
Because it uses a card or wallet of the same size as a reference, you can only measure fairly small objects, and the UI may seem a bit complicated at first, but hopefully its creator will improve it.
Its limited usefulness certainly makes the three-dollar price point questionable, but the innovation it offers is enough to not give it much thought.
