Hackers showed on Tech Insider that they can get into any office by purchasing electronic components worth $700 from Amazon and eBay to clone access cards.
“We observed a group of hackers that took full control of an energy company in less than 24 hours.”, writes Tech Insider.
Standing outside the company, a hacker known as metrofader charges the electronic signal of an employee whose device is in his pocket to an external sensor. The door unlocks even though the card is fake and made with data that were stolen the same day.
According to researchers from RedTeam Security, hackers can purchase a $350 device that is available on Amazon and eBay to bypass access control systems that rely on employees' electronic signals by manufacturing counterfeit access cards. The cloning of these cards is done easily without needing to steal employees' personal data.

A hacker from the company RedTeam visited a company posing as a student who wanted a tour, and in his laptop bag he had this device. The device can monitor the unencrypted communication between an employee's access card and the access control systems used to open/close the doors.
The RFID badge reader offered for sale on Amazon and eBay is capable of capturing the access card data from about one meter away and writing it to a microSD card.
The intruder simply needs to be near an employee when they use their RFID badge. Then they can write the data they captured into a fake employee signal using a second device called Proxmark that costs $300."

Of course, to improve their security, companies must encrypt their data so that it is not stolen so easily by employees, and another good measure to protect access cards is RFID-blocking sleeves.
