New evidence reaches the hands of the investigator handling the case of the student of the Dairy School of Ioannina, Vangelis Giakoumakis, as diverse groups of investigators continue to search for the "unknown" aspects of the disappearance that could "tie up" the case file.
For the first time in police history, a death, the death of Vangelis, has caused such great mobilization of groups that call themselves "volunteer groups of investigators" and are organized - among other things - through Facebook. Their main goal is to search for evidence that will prove that Vangelis' death was not a simple suicide. However, the preliminary investigation material does not establish the crime of homicide for any of the accused so far.
Most of the self-proclaimed investigators are unaware of the case file and are moving in "uncharted" waters, while others have proceeded with a real investigation by speaking with witnesses and conducting on-site investigations.
A typical case is the group that managed to obtain photographic material taken a few minutes after the discovery of Vangelis' body.

Their ultimate goal is to hand over the collected material to the judicial authorities. According to the report, at least seven closed and open groups have been created on Facebook for this purpose alone, some of which collaborate with people from Giakoumakis' family circle. The core of the self-proclaimed researchers is estimated to consist of 50 people, who communicate with each other mainly through closed groups on Facebook, to which the general user cannot become a member.
The investigator handling the case, who is described as excellent at her job, is particularly careful and is eagerly looking for new witnesses and additional evidence that could lead the main investigation to other paths. It is no coincidence that the District Attorney had prosecuted for intentional homicide in the Giakoumakis case, without personalizing the charge. "We believe that this is a murder and as time passes, our opinion is strengthened," says the lawyer for the Giakoumakis family, Mr. Dimitris Boukas.
The missing piece of evidence, which, according to judicial sources, could potentially overturn the facts, is a "disappeared" hard drive. It is estimated that photographic material and videos containing savage beatings with the victim Vangelis have been stored on it. The hard drive, the disappearance of which has particularly concerned the Investigating Officer, was hidden by a student at the Dairy School of Ioannina, before the police searched the rooms of Estia. During the investigations that followed, a hard drive was seized from the defendant's room, but not the one in question.
One of the investigators who decided on his own initiative to deal with the case is Detective Konstantinos Spyrou, who will submit to the Inquiry a file with evidence he has gathered from an investigation that lasted 13 months. With this material, Mr. Spyrou is trying to prove that Vangelis did not commit suicide but was murdered and taken to the spot where he was found dead. His file includes photographs of the deceased Vangelis that are part of the forensic report, as well as notes that explain his reasoning:
"The stomach of Giakoumakis was found completely intact. Therefore, it is confirmed that no animal, or to be precise, no large animal, attacked the pile and did not feed on it. Veterinarians and zoologists claim that if the body had been attacked by scavengers, even rats, the first place they would have attacked would be the stomach." Mr. Spyrou claims that a faulty forensic investigation has been carried out because the evidence from Vangelis' wrist and face does not indicate suicide.
For his part, Mr. Boukas notes to ET that “the family has complete confidence in the investigation conducted by the competent forensic doctor, Mr. Theodoros Vougiouklakis.” In the conclusion of his report on the causes of death, Mr. Vougiouklakis had not reached a clear result, as – according to him – the poor condition in which the body was found did not leave him the scientific leeway to make a confident decision.

In another part of the material that he will deliver to the Inquiry, Mr. Spyrou states that "the knife found at the spot where Vangelis' body was found was one and a half meters from the pile, a fact that raises many questions. This knife did not belong to Vangelis and although it is a fairly expensive tool, no one has ever reported that they lost it, nor that they have recognized it as theirs. We believe that if the Authorities locate the owner of the knife, they will have found the person who knows how to tell them exactly what happened."
Mr. Spyrou estimates in his notes that "an exhumation of Giakoumakis' body must take place, at which the head of the Piraeus forensic service must be present."
