Imagine, if you don't have dyslexia, how difficult it is for someone who does to understand the Internet, a place where text is king. A developer named Victor Windell wanted to give us an idea, and for that purpose he created a simulation that allows each of us to see what it's like to suffer from severe dyslexia and try to read some online content.
“I remember a conversation I had a while ago with a dyslexic friend of mine,” says Windell. “I asked him out of curiosity what it was like when he was reading a text. He explained by describing it as ‘like the letters were jumping up and down.'”

The words and numbers dance before your eyes. They twist backwards and upside down, morphing on the screen as you desperately try to make sense of them. For a moment, you might be able to understand how difficult it is for dyslexics to navigate such a large volume of letters when it comes to a large text. Windell wrote the code to give us an idea….

“I wrote a code to scan a webpage and find all the words. Each word is chosen randomly, and two letters within it, except the first and last, change positions. It does this constantly, over and over, 20 times a second,” says Windell.

It managed to convey some of what a person with dyslexia sees when logging on to Twitter, or when trying to read their emails or news websites. “It is an intellectual disability that affects reading and writing, but it is completely independent of the person’s general intelligence,” said Luz Rello of Carnegie Mellon University, who studies dyslexia and is dyslexic himself. “It does not affect oral learning. And it is also international, since you can find it in every language, country and nationality. “Although dyslexia manifests itself visually, the condition is actually more related to problems connecting sounds to letters, which can make it more difficult for a person to try to locate words.

Dyslexia is a common condition, with the international dyslexia advocacy group estimating that it affects one in 10 people worldwide. Tools like these can prove useful not only for understanding, but also for creating a more diverse Internet, where more people can actually “consume” valuable content.
