Hackers lost $800 million due to a spelling mistake!

In short: We can't give much importance to a spelling mistake unless it costs someone millions of dollars. Here's a story about some hackers who targeted a Bangladeshi bank and were partially successful in transferring millions of dollars until the authorities realized something was wrong when they saw their stupid spelling mistake.

Hackers lost $800 million due to a spelling mistake!

It wasn't their fault, it was the rush for money that lured the hackers into writing quickly and making a typo. And they could never have imagined that a typo would cost them millions, instead of leaving behind a legacy of one of the biggest bank hacks in history.

The story goes something like this: A group of cybercriminals hacked into the servers of a Bangladeshi bank. After breaching the server, the hackers were able to make off with $81 million by sending money transfer requests to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The money transfer requests were intended for various companies in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

There were a total of 13 transfer requests, and everything was going well until a spelling mistake caused them trouble. After completing four successful transfers, the team briefly lost control and misspelled the word “foundation,” typing it as “fandation.” A single spelling mistake caught the attention of the authorities at the Federal Reserve Bank. So, they decided to stop any further money transfers.

These 13 transfers would have cost over $800 million if the hackers had paid attention to their spelling. Fortunately, the Bangladeshi bank was able to recover some of the stolen money and is now working with the authorities' money laundering division to track down the rest.

If there had not been a sloppy spelling mistake, the hackers would have become rich and their fates would have been completely different!
