6 tips to keep your Facebook clean, safe and private!

You have thousands of friends on Facebook that you don't even know; now is probably the time to do a digital cleanup!

Facebook

Check your security and privacy settings and make sure that some occasional acquaintances you met in a bar centuries ago have not yet taken the most personal details of your life. Get rid of games and apps that you logged into with Facebook years ago but haven't logged in to before!

Here are six tips to keep your profile clean and safe:

1. Secure your account!

Surely you have heard many times that you need to have a strong password! This is very important especially for email and social networks where the biggest part of your online life takes place. Moreover, in many applications the login is done via Facebook, so if your password is stolen, other accounts of yours will also be at risk!

Because passwords are difficult to manage, it is not enough to rely only on them! Enable what the social network calls Login Approvals. It is in the account settings under the “Security” section. After you do this, you will be asked for confirmation with a code that will come as a message to your phone when you log in from another device.

2. Check your privacy settings!

Facebook offers a set of quick privacy shortcuts. On desktop and laptop computers look for the icon with the small lock at the top right. On Apple and Android devices you can find them via the menu with the three horizontal lines.

The shortcut key is “ Who can see my stuff ?”. Check if you are inadvertently broadcasting your personal information to the entire Facebook community. You might at least want your personal details to be visible to your friends and not be public! And of course adjust some things you don’t want to be visible to certain individuals or groups e.g. to your parents or some colleagues.

Also check in this section the “Timeline and Tagging”. You can enable the option to approve every time someone tags you in a post or photo.

If you are on a desktop or laptop, Facebook has the Privacy Checkup tool to review your settings. Soon the tool will also be available on mobile devices.

3. Delete friends!

Clean up the friends you are no longer in contact with! If you think unfriending is too bad, add them to the Acquaintances or Restricted list. The Acquaintances list means you won't see them as often in your news feed, but they will continue to have access to anything you share with your friends. The Restricted list means they will only see your public posts.

You can also create custom lists such as Family or Friends from school. You can create a list if you are on a computer by clicking More in the friends category on the left of the News Feed. The features are limited on mobile but any change you make from a computer will also appear there!

4. Watch the apps!

Someone may have invited you to play a game years ago! You tried it for a while but then perhaps you stopped, yet the app still has access to your data. You may have used Facebook to log into a service you no longer use! It's time to log out!

The Privacy Checkup tool will automatically review the apps for you. On mobile devices, look for “Apps” in the account settings.

A similar option is the Security Checkup tool. It’s an easy way to log out of Facebook from devices you rarely use. You can also turn on notifications when someone tries to log in from a new device or browser. To run it, go to https://Facebook.com/securitycheckup on a PC. From the Android app, you can search for the security checkup in the Help Center. On iPhones and iPads, you’ll need to find the options separately in your account settings under “Security.”

5. Check your data!

You can adjust which posts you want to see more or less by going to “News Feeds Preferences.” The setting is located at the top right in browsers and Android apps and at the bottom left on iPhones. There you can set which friends you want to appear at the top and completely hide the posts of some!

You can also set the videos that appear to you not to play automatically! On Android go to “Autoplay” in “App Settings.” On iPhones it is in the account settings under “Videos and Photos.”

6. Plan for the future!

Two settings can eliminate sorrow later in life… or in death!

In security settings you can set certain friends as trusted contacts. They will have the ability to help you if you get locked out of your account at some point for any reason. You can also set someone as “Legacy Contact”, a family member or a close friend who will be used as your manager if something bad happens to you! They will not be able to make posts from your account nor see your messages but they will be able to see your friend requests and perform some additional actions.
