This type of fraud, known as confidence fraud , targets victims primarily between the ages of 40 and 60 and relies on the victims’ assumption that they are involved in a loving and caring relationship. It is a social engineering method in which perpetrators “work the crime” for weeks, or even months, in order to ensure that the person on the other side is committed to their relationship. Once trust is built, the perpetrator begs the victim for help, usually explaining that money is needed to finally get the two of them together.
