Google confirmed that most companies providing Internet access in Turkey were blocking its servers in the country and leading to incorrect websites, with servers impersonating Google's. However, it is not clear which Internet routes were blocked, although it is known that Twitter and YouTube were blocked in Turkey in the midst of the election period.
According to Steven Carstensen on March 29, 2014, Google received credible reports, confirmed by its own engineers, that the company's DNS servers were being disrupted by "most" Turkish ISPs.
In fact, the Google engineer explains that the DNS server could be likened to a telephone directory and what happened was replacing the directory with a similar one in which incorrect phone numbers have been registered for some names. That is exactly what happened, Carstensen writes: Turkish ISPs have set up servers masquerading as Google's DNS servers, pointing to incorrect addresses for some websites, the relevant blog post states.
