The Hackers were testing a new tool called Bangstresser

A group of Hackers who call themselves “New World Hacking” has taken responsibility for the DDoS attack that took the BBC offline for a few hours on New Year's Eve.

The hackers contacted BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones and said they did not want to hit their site and that the attack was just a test for their new DDoSing tool.

«It was only a test», said Ownz, one of the members of the New World Hacking group. “We did not intend to take it offline for many hours. Our servers are quite powerful.”

Testing a DDoS tool called Bangstresser

The Hacker told Cellan-Jones that their new tool, called Bangstresser, was specifically designed by a hacktivist based in the USA, and they intend to use it against ISIS (IS, ISIL, Daesh).

He also said that the group, formed in 2012, consists of 12 members, eight men and four women, and they are only interested in attacking ISIS targets. All group members are located in the USA.

The group also supports Anonymous campaigns. They have participated in Anonymous' #OpKKK and #OpParis campaigns , which exposed the real identities of Ku Klux Klan members and shut down tens of thousands of ISIS-affiliated Twitter accounts.

The BBC website had no hope

According to a previous report provided by the group to Mr. Callen-Jones, Bangstresser is capable of launching 600 GBps attacks, more than enough to take down even the largest websites on the Internet.

According to the previous report on the BBC DDoS attack, the BBC's main website, iPlayer platform, and iPlayer radio app experienced a complete failure on the morning of December 31st.

BBC staff said that the DDoS attack hit one of iPlayer's databases, which was malfunctioning and took down all related services together.
