Anonymous attacks to prevent imminent execution of teenager

Anonymous

With cyber-attacks against the government of Saudi Arabia, the international hacker organization Anonymous is trying to save the life of the young Ali Mohammed al-Nimr’s, who has been sentenced to death on the charge that he participated in a resistance movement with anti-government actions.

Al-Nimr was arrested in 2012, being only 16 years old, and was sentenced to death by beheading and subsequently by public crucifixion.

As several human rights groups claim, with the sentencing of al-Nimr to death the Saudi Arabian government aims to set an example for those rebelling against the regime, but it does not intend to carry out the punishment.

Nevertheless, the young al-Nimr could be executed at any moment, since the only thing standing between him and the condemned is the king of Saudi Arabia, Salman, who must sign the court's decision.

In response to this incident, Anonymous appears to have launched DDoS attacks against Saudi Arabian government websites.

Within the framework of the #OpNimr campaign, a large number of government websites appear to have been taken offline since last Saturday, and among the targeted sites are also the websites of the Ministry of Interior (moi.gov.sa), the Ministry of Health (moh.gov.sa), and the Ministry of Economy and Planning (mep.gov.sa).

In their statement addressed to King Salman and the Saudi Arabian government, the Anonymous say: “An innocent young teenage boy has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia and we will not stand as mere observers”.

“13 judges have already approved the death penalty for Ali Mohammed al-NIMR, which means that only the approval from King Salman is pending. We cannot and will not allow this to happen”, they add.

“Thousands of people die each year because of the Saudi Arabian government and will be punished for their actions”, they warn.
