The Internet does not discriminate, it collects huge amounts of data, even from your children – 67% of children's apps and websites collect data about children.
The Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN) investigated the practices of more than 1,500 apps and websites, and found that the privacy of child users is as shaky ground for Web products aimed at children as it is for adult users.
According to the findings, 67% of children's apps and websites collect personal data from children using the service in question. Half of them share the information they collect with third-party services.
Of all apps and websites for children, only 31% had any kind of prevention or control measures to limit the collection of personal information from children.
But that's where the good news ends. 22% of all apps/ websites for kids asked for their phone numbers, while 23% asked for photos or videos.
Even worse, 58% of these apps/sites redirected children to other services, without taking into account the fact that these pages may contain content unsuitable for minors.
In case children or their parents wanted to delete the profiles, only 29% of the websites surveyed would allow their personal account data to be removed from the service.
Of all websites, a quarter actively encourage the participation of at least one parent when a child uses a site or app.
