Windows: 6 programs you need
At some point, we all find ourselves faced with a computer empty of programs. Installing the right applications is essential for the future course of the system. Especially if we are talking about novice users. Below I present 6 free programs - each top of its kind - that are good to keep in mind when we find ourselves in this position.
1. Antivirus
Bitdefender free has been sweeping the awards in recent years, consistently coming out on top in independent labs such as Av-test and Av-comparatives. What I like about this program is its quiet operation, it won't bother you at all. It's also really light - ideal for systems with little RAM. The only free antivirus that shows it can compete with Bitdefender is Avira and it will be the alternative.
2. Malware protection
For additional protection against malware, the presence of an antivirus is not enough. The reason is that antiviruses do not detect the various types of malware that circulate on the internet. So I recommend installing a program like the famous Malwarebytes. Anti-malware programs work in parallel with antiviruses for additional protection. It is recommended to run a manual scan every now and then, in order to detect threats that the antivirus did not detect.
3. Browser
The browser is the program we use to surf the internet, check our emails, watch videos, etc. The most famous web browsers are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, the pre-installed Internet Explorer and Opera. In recent years, the only use of Internet Explorer has been to download Chrome or Firefox, and for good reason. This is said to be expected to change with the arrival of Windows 10.
Although Chrome is known for its speed and Firefox for the add-ons/plugins it can support, my choice is Opera, a product of the Norwegian Opera Software ASA. Opera is an excellent middle ground browser. It is better than Firefox while its scores are very close to Google Chrome in terms of graphics, speed and performance. If we take into account the security vulnerabilities that have appeared from time to time in Chrome as well as the excessive memory usage when we have many tabs open, I end up choosing Opera with my eyes closed.
4. Media player
The famous VLC media player (downloaded over 1.3 billion times) is fast to load files, doesn't use a lot of RAM, and supports all video formats. However, there are many alternatives to consider. SMPlayer continues to receive excellent reviews, and BSplayer is fast, lightweight, and has built-in subtitle search in all languages.
5. Office application
Word, Powerpoint and Excel are integral programs for the average user as they allow for writing and editing text, managing spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and so on. However, Microsoft's office suite is not available for free and so we have to look for alternative and equivalent programs. LibreOffice offers its own free Word (Writer), Excel (Calc), Powerpoint (Impress) package, supports the Greek language with automatic spell correction and its appearance refers to our familiar Microsoft Office.
6. Image editing
Paint.net is available for free and has many features. It is extremely simple to use and will satisfy most users who want to crop images, apply effects, filters, etc. For anyone who wants more features, similar to Photoshop, then the solution is the powerful and also free GIMP.
