Google received particular criticism from social media due to the racist characterization given to the photo's label.
Google's Zunger said that this was one of the potential errors that he knew could happen and that he had already taken steps to prevent a similar error from happening to other users.
It is also working on long-term linguistic fixes for better recognition of dark-skinned faces.
This isn't the first time Google Photos has mislabeled user tags. In May, it misidentified photos of dogs as horses.
Users can move mislabeled photos within the app, which can improve the app's accuracy over time, using a technology known as machine learning.
Only time will tell if Google will be exposed again in the eyes of its users.
