The program that will read our minds is coming (?) – How will it convert thoughts into text?
A few years ago, a program that could read thoughts and convert them into text seemed like the stuff of science fiction. But with the leaps and bounds of technology, science fiction is becoming a reality.
In an article published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, new experimental research has shown that "reading" thoughts by a computer is not a distant dream. On the contrary, scientists' efforts are a few steps away from the final, great discovery
In the experiment, electrode sheets were placed on the brains of seven people, which collected data from neurons associated with speech and thought. A computer algorithm was built to connect sounds with the corresponding brain cells that fire.
The end result was impressive. The researchers' system worked with unprecedented success, being able to read the brain cells well enough to "guess" the corresponding sounds that would be produced 75% of the time. This percentage is sufficient, since it then follows a self-correction process, similar to that of mobile phones, which synthesizes the words with great accuracy.
Unlike existing algorithms, the effort by researchers at the State University of New York aims to directly recognize brain signals so that they can be converted into written speech on the computer.
A program such as Siri, for example, memorizes specific words , resulting in much lower efficiency.
Of course, the scientists' endeavor is much more difficult than creating a simple "voice control" program like Siri. The correspondence of brain cells to sounds is something that requires very extensive study, as well as a series of experiments.
However, the first steps were taken, they yielded more fruit than the American researchers imagined, and thus the process began with the best omens.
