Microsoft Edge is the new default browser for Windows 10, and the company seems to be making a big effort to improve the application. Of course, the ultimate goal is to develop a better browser than its main competitors.
Recent reports indicate that these efforts appear to be paying off, at least when it comes to JavaScript.
One of the main focuses in developing Microsoft Edge was to make JavaScript faster, the company said in a blog post today. The company explains that the Chakra JavaScript engine is faster than any other 64-bit browser currently on the market.
To determine how fast Edge is, Microsoft tested its new browser on two different benchmarks, Octane 2.0 and Jet Stream. The tests showed that in both benchmarks, Edge performs surprisingly well, scoring better than competitors Firefox and Chrome, as well as Internet Explorer.
According to Microsoft's test results, Edge is over 1.6 times faster than Apple's Jet Stream benchmark, and 2.25 times faster than Google Chrome in the Octane 2.0 test.
The company also says that it conducted the tests with Chrome Canary, as it considers its Edge to be in beta.
It should be noted that these tests were conducted by Microsoft itself , and only look at JavaScript, not overall performance. We'll probably have to wait for upcoming third-party tests before drawing any conclusions.
Still, the news is quite encouraging for the speed difference between Edge and Internet Explorer alone. It seems that with Windows 10, browsing the web can be impressively faster than if you were using Internet Explorer before.
