Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. managed to "steal" from Apple Inc. the title of the world's leading smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter of 2015, Reuters news agency reports, citing a statement issued by research firm Strategy Analytics.
Samsung reportedly shipped a total of 83.2 million smartphones worldwide and captured a 24% market share in the first quarter. This is down from the 31% share a year ago, but still higher than Apple's 18%.
"Samsung continues to face challenges in Asia and other regions, but overall performance has stabilized considerably this quarter, with the company overtaking Apple to reclaim the top spot as the world's largest smartphone company," said Neil Moston, managing director at Strategy Analytics.
The company reported operating income of 6 trillion won (5.12 billion euros). Profits for the April-June period are expected to continue to grow, thanks to the launch of two new models, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
Samsung recorded profits of 2.48 billion euros from sales in the first quarter, which it estimates will increase significantly in the next quarter, as demand for the new S6 devices exceeds inventories.
"Sales of the S6 are performing as well as expected, while demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge has exceeded expectations," said Samsung Vice President Park Jin-yang.
