Google has released a new Places API for Android and has also started a beta version for iOS. The move will allow app developers to add more accurate location pickers to their apps, so that users can more accurately determine their location. The location will also now be displayed with its actual name, rather than the latitude and altitude that was displayed until now.
The new API brings a number of new features, such as a drop-in UI location picker, autocomplete support for location searches, the ability to accurately determine the user's current location, as well as detailed information about that location.
In addition, it allows users to add new locations to database , which already numbers over 100 million points.
The Google Places API and corresponding JavaScript libraries have been available for applications for some time now, but the new APIs will help developers add functionality to the applications they develop for mobile devices.
The Google Developers website has several articles, programming samples, and demos for the Android API, but there is also a corresponding website for the iOS beta version.
